Lesson Before Dying, A (DVD)

Based on the New York Times No.1 bestselling novel and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award, Don Cheadle and Cicely Tyson star in 'A Lesson Before Dying." Grant Wiggins (Don Cheadle) has become resigned to racial injustice in the south. Returning to his home town with a college degree, he continues to teach in the same one-room school of his youth. Struggling to make a difference in an oppressive time and place, Grant is called upon by two local women, Tante Lou and Miss Emma, to visit the town prison. There, Jefferson, a simple young man, has been convicted of a murder he did not commit and sentenced to die like an animal. Jefferson is full of rage and resentment, and the women are convinced that somehow he must be taught to die not like an animal, but like a man. It falls upon the teacher to enrich a life he cannot save and, in so doing, somehow redeem his own, by teaching one young man "A Lesson Before Dying."

This is a basic implementation of a service that provides retrieval access to the UPC web site. Its was coded to verify basic  proof-of-concept for development of another application and was not intended to provide be anything more than basic functionality in the retrieval  of UPC data from the web site.

There are several places where simple code was left in place rather than using more advanced Java features/methods to allow for easier  understanding of junior developers. Not much time spent refactoring or cleaning up the code. It is provided as a starting point only.

It contains a Factory service that returns a service object configured using the (see below) file found in the class path of  the executed code. The UpcQueryService can respond with an implementation of the UpcResponse and supporting interfaces or with an InputStream  allowing direct access to the response from the from the web site.

JSR 353 is the Java API for JSON is currently under development ( &  The several Java JSON implementations seemed to be more than I was wanting/needing so I wrote a basic parser to provide JSON parsing capability  needed. Its not perfect but is a good basic start.
