Long DescriptionMore action film than comedy, R.I.P.D. feels like you're watching a good video game, thanks to a blend of live action and computer-generated images. Based on the Dark Horse comic, the premise of the story is that precincts full of undead police officers, who were corrupt during their living years, roam the earth as part of the Rest in Peace Department, rounding up dead people and keeping the living safe in exchange for a good word put in with "eternal affairs." Newly double-crossed officer Nick (Ryan Reynolds) and his long-undead partner Roy (Jeff Bridges), who died way back in the time of the Wild West, stumble upon a plot to reverse the flow of the one-way tunnel to the afterworld and suddenly find the entire future of the world in their hands. Their mission of containment has just become an all-out war against the dead. The characters in this film are quirky, and the fact that they appear to the living in very different bodies than their original forms adds plenty of comic moments, but the film is first and foremost an action movie. The special effects are good and the story is entertaining enough, so while it's not destined to be an award winner, R.I.P.D. is 96 minutes of enjoyably forgettable movie fun. --Tami Horiuchi

Upgrades never seem to go as planned

Well heck! We had another upgrade of hardware today and the process simply took far longer than expected. Sorry!

Yes, we added some more new hardware. To insure that nothing got lost we had to perform a full database backup.

This backup required copying over 70gig of data from one machine to another and this required a complete database shutdown.

Now this step took longer than expected but that wasn't all, installing the new hardware took longer than expected.

The good news? We now have new servers for both the web server and the database server PLUS backup equipment for both servers. The old equipment has been recycled into massive file servers and backup servers so we haven't wasted anything.

The hope is that all these upgrades over the past couple weeks will improve over all system performance and reliability. With all the traffic we have been seeing lately, the old database server and web server have been getting pushed to their limits. We now have some breathing room again.

Thanks for your patients.
